KeNHA Announces 4-Day Traffic Disruption at Section of Thika Superhighway

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced a temporary traffic disruption along the Thika Superhighway at Kihunguro in Kiambu County.

In a notice dated Thursday, April 10, KeNHA Director General Kung’u Ndung’u attributed the disruption to planned maintenance works along the affected section of the highway.

According to Ndung’u, the maintenance will take place over four days—from Friday, April 11, to Monday, April 14, 2025.

He revealed that the section of the highway will be closed daily between 11 p.m. and 4 a.m. throughout the maintenance period.

“KeNHA would like to inform the public of a temporary traffic disruption following the closure of a section of Thika Superhighway (S1) Road at Kihunguro from Friday, April 11, 2025, to Monday, April 14, 2025, between 2300hrs to 0400hrs. This is to allow for highway maintenance works along the section,” KeNHA announced.

Motorists travelling from Nairobi to Thika and vice versa are advised to use the service lanes as indicated in the drawing or as directed by traffic marshals.

Additionally, the Authority urged motorists to follow the traffic management plan, project road signs and to cooperate with police and traffic marshals on site.

The announcement comes three days after Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir revealed that hundreds of road contractors would be resuming their work this week following the government’s decision to pay the pending bills.

Chirchir, while addressing the press on Friday, April 4, said the government had received Ksh63 billion to clear the pending bills that had stalled over 580 road projects in the country.

The Transport CS noted that several projects were stalled after the government failed to clear debts owed to over 270, both local and foreign, contractors whose arrears had accumulated to Ksh10 billion by July last year.

The move followed after the contractors downed their tools when the government failed to pay their debts for both ongoing and completed road projects in the country, with some projects dating back to 2016.

Chirchir further noted that the multibillion loan taken to settle the arrears would be repaid in cash through a Ksh175 billion bond that Kenya will float in the coming months.
